When decay is small, the decayed part is removed and the tooth is rebuilt with a tooth-coloured (composite) filling. When decay or a crack reaches the nerve inside the tooth, root canal treatment removes the inflamed nerve, cleans the canals and seals them, so the tooth can be kept instead of extracted.
